Female Octogenarians Caught Playing at the Beach

OK so to start- what in the world is an octogenarian? It happens to be one of my favorite words. It means a person who is 80. And if you are 80 I think you really do deserve such a fancy and fun name as octogenarian. Anyway, I was out in the water playing dunk my 11 year old daughter. My mother and her cousin were doing their exercises in the waist deep water. Walking, using their arms, and looking solid and strong, and just a bit serious.

Then all of a sudden they began to play catch. They tossed the little orange and black water ball-the new ones for this sumer that “bounce” in the water- And things changed. There was bit of a giggle floating across the water. They began to have just a bit of a bounce in their movements. Then it happened- they let loose and began to splash. These two old ladies- yes my mother and her cousin are old ladies- they splashed each other for all they were worth.

Needless to say I was in utter hysterics, as were many other beach goers. Who ever saw old ladies just let loose and play like that? Not me.

SO after they settled down in their beach chairs, I asked them what it was like to get out there and play like that. “OH, were we playing?” said my mother. “I was just trying to get your mother back for all the times she got me. I thought this might be my best chance ever.” “And was it?” asked my mother. “No- you won again like always.” “And boy was it ever fun!” They both said in unison and burst into that laugh you usually only hear with a couple of 8 year olds.

So at 8 or 80+ the desire to play a physical competition still lingers. My mother wasn’t about to let her “little” cousin get the best of her. And her cousin still longed to win. Bottom line- It was fun.

But how could they still do it? Lots of things. Here’s a few things.
* They still do exercises daily
* They eat healthy- relatively anyway
* They think they can do things
* They love to compete
* They have high self-esteem

So as you do your play or compete formally, know that you may be setting yourself up for an octogenarian all out splash fight in a few years down the line. IF nothing else it will make others have a great ab workout with all the laughing caused by you.

Some Days I Really Question Why I Run

Some days I really question why I run and you’d think that when the heat and humidity are supposed to reach unbearable numbers, and people are hot inside their air conditioned homes and I don’t have any AC, just fans in my home, and a river, pool and ocean to swim in- None at my home though- that maybe I’d think this was a great day to take off.

Then again you might think that I’d want to get out there and have a real connection run with the heat. Let it really get into my soul and stir things up.

Of course since I suggested these they are not what I did. I decided last night that I needed to get in 12 miles today to stay on task with my 60 miles per week goal to reach my year long goal of 2011 miles in 2011.

This being decided I knew that I wasn’t going to skip the day and I wasn’t young and foolish enough to want to have a connection with the heat run. So I set my alarm for 5:15 and got my self up. That was actually rather easy. It was light out, but the sun hadn’t quite come up yet.

First things first- Lyona –my dog- needed her morning outing. Easy enough- just a ¾ mile out and back. She KNEW that she was going right back home after her business- no long run for her today!

Then came the first hard moment, when I brought her back to the house and had to turn right around and take off. OK so I do this many mornings, but this morning it might have been nice to just say, “Oh its so hot I’m going in to nap- maybe I’ll run this evening.”

Whew- I did it. And yes I was already wet from the outside in from the humidity with just that short little jaunt. As I ran on I saw the sun rise. This was extraordinary. It was brilliant magenta- without even a red ball of sun in the middle. But I had my plan to be back before that sun had anytime to really get into action. I had some dream running time- that’s when I know I am going and I don’t really remember when I am in the run what is happening or what I’m thinking I just keep going. And got through Long Shore.

Off to the beach- oh it was lovely- Just a whisper of breeze. Not cooling. But somehow refreshing nonetheless.

Then it was uphill after that, which is OK with me. I like the up hills. I had purposely made my run route to have an option to head home early if it really was too hot. I’m not really interested in being in the news for having been found in a bush about to die of heat stroke.

This made for the second hard moment- I knew I could go on AND I knew there was coolness at home. I checked myself out- was I delirious? No. Was I still sweating? Yes. Was my mouth dry? No. Did I have any cramps? No. Did I really want to run another bunch of miles? YES. All that thinking took me a mile. And that was good because there were five side streets for that mile that lead straight home. I did run on the right side of the road to avoid the even easier access to those streets since they were all off to the left.

Then came a nice steep hill- Park Lane. I put my head down and ran up. Still in the shade and truly on my way home now-

As you may expect after the up came the down. And as a runner there are different ways to go down. You can attack it, let it take you, or somehow glide down without much work at all. For me the last is actually the slowest, but under the heat circumstances I took the easy way down. If you’re not a runner then there is no easy way down. You just have to do it.

Up a mile, down a mile, and onto the real home stretch. The sun was really doing her thing. It was just plain HOT HOT HOT.

The last main road till my road was being resurfaced. This morning is was a packed dirt/gravel road. I want to mention it because of the difference between the CT drivers on this kind of road and the NH drivers. Normally I think the CT drivers are more intense and indifferent about runners, but not on this dirt road. They made huge arches around me, drove at a snails pace, and made sure I was safe. This dirt road was alien territory to them. For me, I loved it. It was cooler than the road and just softer to the touch.

Ah, my street- in the shade and around the bends- Into the driveway. Looked the same to me, but I was surely different. I had made it. I had made this trip, this run, as planned, before the truly intense heat had struck, before I had to give up, before I had let any sensible sane ideas come into action.

With that thought I took the hose and doused myself for ten whole minutes to cool down. And yes I did let plenty of that hose water trickle right into my mouth.

I went dripping wet up to my room- aimed the fans on me and stretched. When done I was good to go for the day.

Parents-Encourage and Inspire your Girl Athletes

I didn’t get any exercise for me in today.  Still I had a great day-  I watched two lacrosse games.  The first was U13 girls- meaning the girls were all younger than 13 on Jan 1 2011.  This team has 16 players with 8 who have never played before and the girls range down in age to 8- So a very inexperienced and young team.  The first half was a wash out.  The other team totally creamed us.  1-13.

Not really sure how a coach could have allowed or encouraged such a slaughter at this age, but instead of totally giving up my daughter’s team kept trying.  We had two time outs when the coach spent the time totally encouraging the girls.  There was so much she could have been negative about, but she chose to talk about every little strength that the girls gave.  She also gave them specific practical skills to try.  After each time out the girls came back stronger.

The second half was a new game, with the final score being 4 to 14 (or the half being 2-3 in our favor)  So what made this difference?  Why didn’t these girls play this way for the first half?  And most importantly why did these girls go for it the second half?

Of course I told you about the coach.  But as parents we played our part.

  • We stayed attentive to the whole game. In other words we did not start to chat amongst our selves with an attitude of not caring since the girls obviously had no chance of winning.
  • We cheered and supported the girls efforts.  No one yelled about all the possible plays the girls could have made.  No one moaned when the goalie let yet another goal in.
  • Our remarks were enthusiastic and encouraging.  We yelled for sure, when the girls ran with the ball, scooped it up, made an attempt at a shot.
  • We ignored commenting about the slaughter attempt.  If anything we used the slaughter attempt to instill energy and enthusiasm in the girls.

This is the important thing. Really the ONLY thing that matters to young athletes- Our girls came off the field feeling good.  The score was not the important part.  What was important was that they actually learned to play the game.  That they were out there trying their best.  That it was lots of fun and exciting to run up and down the field.

As a parent/coach/athlete I urge you to encourage and inspire your girls. And have fun while doing it.

Do a Brain Dump to Get in the Zone and Win

This is a critical aspect of being an elite athlete.  And doing your own personal best. Whenever I talk with national and world champion athletes there is one common theme for all of them.  When in the competition- from skiing to soccer to figure skating- you name it it’s all the same- the athlete does not THINK when competing.  They are in the ZONE.

The other thing I have noticed is that ist harder for girls to let go of thinking.  I think girls are conditioned to think.  And boys are conditioned to not think.  SO as a girl or a parent of a girl, it’s imperative to get away from thinking- about everything that needs to be done just right to succeed.  Let your self, your daughter, be free to get aligned to what you  want.  Go for it from in the Zone- with love and passion.

This zone is being completely aligned with what they want- And that is to win by doing their own personal best.  These athletes don’t want to win because others have issues and failures.  They want to win because they are so in their zone nothing can stop or alter what they are doing.

With my athletes I tell them to be brain-dead.  Some of the girls laugh at this.  But we have a little ritual.  I cup my hands and they dump their brains in- OK not really- but they tip their head and pretend to dump their brains.  Then I toss this away.

When we do this it’s a symbol of getting in full alignment with what they want- To do their own personal best.  The girls notice the difference in how they feel and that makes them be able to do their own personal best.

By the time they get to the championships they don’t think, they BE the best- Their own personal best-  And they win!

Of course as an athlete, or the parent of an athlete, the idea that life is full of ups and downs makes perfect sense.  Each game/competition has a result that is either up or down.  You win or lose, you do well or you screw up.  It seems so cut and dry when looked at this way.
BUT of course it’s not or you would not be in this lifestyle.   It’s how you take the downs in particular that will make or break you as an athlete- Well in life for that matter.

So often I see kids and their parents doing all kinds of things OTHER than using the down as a spring board to go where they want to go.  Blaming is most common- the ref’s, the weather, the coaches, the lack of sleep, to much sleep, all kinds of food issues, other team mates- the list is endless.

When you play the blame game you go nowhere.  You stay going up and down in the exact same spot.  Your opponent has all these things going on just as you do.  If you’re going to go somewhere, then there is one way to do that.

Get the bounce. Use the bounce.  And go with your energy to YOUR greatest potential.

The thing is- It’s so true- every step you take, in ANY aspect of life counts.

It’s you who decides if the step is a good step, a resting step, a bad step, a falling step, a new step, an invigorating step.

No matter what anyone else says about your step- do it to your personal best. If you fall then just remember- you fell a lot when you were a baby and you never gave up.  You don’t even remember falling- so do the same with any missteps you have now.

And just like when you were a baby- CELEBRATE any and all great steps- no matter how small or seemingly insignificant they are to any one else.

 

Not everyone wants to flip on skis, but everyone has something in them that is just as powerful!

This weekend marked the end of skiing at WV ski area- in Waterville Valley, NH.

This is my family’s home and skiing is our passion, our interest, our livelihood.  The last few days were exhilarating.  I personally made the absolute most of every second I had left.  I skied every day for the past two weeks (Except one Thursday when we had a family gathering in Nashua NH)

But the last three days will be of special memory forever.  Friday, I cruised as fast as I could down and immediately back up the lift.  I found a new friend and we skied at this tempo for a couple of hours.  What’s so special about this?  Well, it was in the way I lived my passion.  I was totally into doing my thing at my own personal best.  I listened to myself- My abilities for that particular day. And I was FAST!  Faster than anyone else on the hill.  I wasn’t even in a contest.  I just went as my best.  And I had a HUGE grin at every turn.  I even passed the head racing coach- who was by no means putting along!

The reason I’ll always remember this is that I totally gave into MY personal best.  What anyone else did was irrelevant.  And by being my best I made a new friend who is passionate about skiing.  My life expanded both within me and outside.

The next day, Saturday, I did the “Mountain Challenge” x2.  WV has 13 top to bottom runs.  I skied every run on the mountain twice.  As I went down each run I gave it my all AND I said goodbye to each run AND paid attention to the memories each run held for me.  I was determined and enthusiastic.  People asked what I was doing?- Charity runs or something?  When they discovered I was doing this for myself and no one else they really cheered me on- some had to get over their confusion that I would do something this strenuous and be so determined just because I wanted to.  But my real friends were totally supportive!  And they gave me just an extra challenge.  The lift to the very top of the mountain wasn’t working.  And they asked if I was doing that too- Meaning I would have to climb up to ski down.  So of course I did- The LAST run.

Why is this so special?  Again, I was out there for me.  I was in my element.  I gave myself a difficult challenge.  I kept to my goal.  I stayed focus.  At lunch, I rested enough and had a fantastic talk about home schooling, but I didn’t lose track of what I was doing.  When friends were going on a different run that would have been loads of fun to have gone on with them, I stayed true to my personal objective for the day.

Sunday- the third and last day I skied with the kids and their parents.  There was a pack of kids- all boys except my Jeanee.  The boys went out there and did their first ever front flips, and a bunch even ventured to back flips.  (Jeanee had been doing flips all season)  And I watched and cheered them on.  I heard and felt their enthusiasm for each other and themselves.  They were as pumped on themselves as they were on each other.  These kid had no holds.  Here’s my message to them:

Hey guys you were on top of it!  Remember the feeling of fun, confidence and total abandon.  This is the stuff that makes champions.  YES now you will HAVE to get the technical stuff shored up- But as long as you go every step with your LOVE and Enthusiasm you will be able to get to ANY place you EVER want!

While this was going on my 18 year old, Jamie Crane-Mauzy, and my year 10 year old, Jilly, arrived.  Jilly had smashed her shin Sat so she couldn’t ski and Jamie is getting strong after ACL surgery in Jan so she couldn’t ski.  Now these two girls could have been very bitter about all the fun and excitement that everyone else was having, but instead Jamie got involved with some coaching and pointers- (She won the world championships last year so she knows a thing or two)  And Jilly was so excited to see her friends doing such cool stuff!

What’s special about this??  This day was celebration with family and friends.  No we didn’t have a feast, or a plan to celebrate.  We didn’t even need to plan to be together.  We knew we would be.  Without even texting, talking, or communicating in any way, we ALL arrived at the mountain at the same time.  Pure and simple- we were meant to spend the day together.

So often we try to make the celebration happen. And that is good- as long as all the participants can celebrate their own personal best, their love of each other, know that, above everything else, being true to yourself is what makes you be the most unique and amazing person.  That you have wonderful, fantastic qualities and they love to shine!

Not everyone wants to flip on skis, but everyone has something in them that is just as powerful!

How do you deal with a teenage daughter who has been invited to the X-Games but can’t go because of a torn ACL?

So my daughter was cruising along the path of success.  She qualified for and was invited to international events.  And she podiumed pretty much at all her stops.  With her greatest gold being the Junior World Championships last August.

This fall she was invited to the Dew Tour- a first ever for the ladies in her sport.  What a cool thing to be able to do!  Only her knee got in the way.  It had started to tear in the summer and decided to complete the tear on Dec 17, while in a one-day competition.  Dec 18 was the Dew tour comp.

She had to come home.  As she was coming home from Colorado to New Hampshire, she and I independently realized that if she were to stay at home- even with the most awesome of all home school projects that we could think of- she would go crazy and I would go more crazy trying to keep her from going crazy.  It would be an utter disaster.

We knew not only would she need rehab and to utilize her brain, she would desperately need to get out of the house for a purpose with a time commitment every day.

Luckily for us Plymouth State University is just down the road.

On Monday Dec 20, before even going to see the Doctor, we headed to Plymouth.  We were able to rather easily enroll her in the Frost School with classes beginning Jan. 3.  One class was in person five days a week, the other online.  Whew, that would take care of brain stimulation and having to get out of the house everyday in January.

Tuesday Dec 22 we headed over to Dartmouth-Hitchcock to see Dr. Carr, get the MRI done, and start prehab physical therapy with Steve Vincente.

The call came the next day with the results slightly worse than predicted.  Her ACL was torn and there was some meniscus tear as well.  Neither of us was prepared for that part.

We were able to get through all the Christmas festivities with joy and laughter.  Prehab was off to a great start- the swelling going way down and the range of motion going way up.

On Dec 31, she received her invite to the X Games.  Needless to say, we were all stunned by the bittersweet accomplishment.  She cried- no she sobbed.  Everyone we have told has had the same reaction- An initial total wow that slides into OMG she can’t go realization.

Strange, but it really helps to have that reaction.  To know that even for our friends this is really a terrible blow.

So we seemed to be on the right road to physical and mental health.

BUT

There is another aspect of being the mom of an injured-healing athlete.  That is the range of emotions going on in her- from confidence to panic to depression to loss of sense of self to giddy relief.  These happen in minutes of each other.

Knowing that all these reactions are all normal should help, but even for me I’m having a real hard time with the cross part.  It might be easier if my daughter were a cross person by nature, but luckily for her, she is about as happy and upbeat as they come.  This cross thing is really alien to her.  And to me!

So what did I do?  I got cross back.  I know I “Should” have been understanding, encouraging her to let out her feelings, helping her to get past this.  But guess what?  She was expressing her “cross” at me.  And I’m really just an emotional mama like any other mama; only I’m supposed to know better.

Of course we did a have “nice” talk with all apologies given and accepted.  And I do think it was from our hearts.

But still there was this lingering in me.

Well, what could I do?  I called my sister to let my anger out.  Then Steve, the physical therapist, called.  And just happened to want to be sure that not only was my daughter doing fine with her workouts and emotionally as well, BUT that I was OK too. He talked with me and told me everything I knew.

I’m the one and only person she will feel close enough to be cross with.  I’m the one and only person she will really cry with.  She’ll be great with her doctor, with her nurses, with her PT, with her coaches, with everyone else.  EXCEPT me.  I’m the one and only person she trusts more than anybody else.  All her emotions are her gift of love to me.  There is no getting around it.  It’s tough.  But its worth being loved that much.

And I’m lucky to be able to love her back just as much.  Yep, it’s tough.  She’s tough as nails.  You don’t’ be come a world champion at anything unless you are. And to be her mom I have to be soft as a feather pillow for her and at the same time the board she needs to hammer her nails into right now.

Why Parent Drove 5 Hours for 24 Minutes of Play

SO yesterday was one of those days as a sport parent that really was awful.  I had to drive from my house in pouring snow or snowing rain for THREE HOURS!!! To end up being late for my ten year old daughter’s ice hockey game.  She played two out of three periods.  Then I had to drive back in plain old pouring rain, only two hours this time.  And my daughter’s team lost- again.  By just one point.  Heart breaker for sure.

But the thing is, I was so into getting her there and so was she.  She got herself completely dressed- including skates tied up- while staying in her seatbelt as we drove.  No small feat when we’re talking hockey equipment!  And a dad ran out in the pouring rain to carry her in so she could get in the game ASAP!

Did she ever play her heart out!  The whole team was doing the same! We had two kids who had been sick all week- the goalie being one of them.  But they put aside all of that, gathered their soul energy and dug just a little deeper to really be their best.

We had back-to-back games Saturday and Sunday with the two toughest teams in the league.  And we haven’t been a very hot team this year.  But these two games every player moved up, grabbed at their highest levels of play and it really showed.

Both games were very similar- We held them off for the first period. Second period there was some scoring by both teams.  And third period the other team got the winning goal.

So do you wonder why I spent my day racing around in horrible driving conditions? It’s really simple.  When I see my kids and their friends put that “WOW POWER” into what they do I know it’s a good thing.

There is something that is intrinsically and deeply wonderful for kids to have the chance to get totally into a sport.  There is the integration of the physical and cognitive for sure-  That means body and brain working together.

And while that is all good, there is something deeper. This gets to the kids real deep soul/spirit.  When your kids have the chance to go to their deepest and best, they know they are truly valuable.  There is no question about them feeling good about their efforts, their energy, themselves.  They know.

This team came off that ice thrilled with themselves.  Of course they were disappointed to have lost once again, but they knew they had played their own personal best.  And I think they were able to actually understand what they as a team and what they as individuals had done to play so well and to know their mistakes.  They held their own and weren’t slaughtered.
